As expected, India's two largest GSM mobile service providers, Airtel and Vodafone have announced that in conjunction with Apple, that they will be bringing the dream gadget 3G iphone to India later this year. The announcement followed the unveiling of Apple 3G iphone by Steve Jobs at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. Though Steve Jobs had announced on June 10th that 22 countries will launch the iphone on July 22, 2008 but neither Airtel nor Vodafone has specified the launch date or the precise price of the 3G iPhone in India.

After a long wait and discussion, the wraps were finally taken off of the much-hyped 3G iPhone. Lets have a quick recap of the stuff the 3G iphone is made of. The 3G iPhone 2.0 combines all the features of iPhone with 3G networking and makes the new iphone "twice as fast" as the first-generation version of the iPhone. The 3G iPhone has built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services and iPhone 2.0 software with support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

The original version of iPhone was certainly innovative and groundbreaking and quite expensive. The euphoria was so great that both techies and the common masses qued-up to get the iPhone at $599 and $699 for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively. But the price fator certainly limited the buyers.

With the passage of time, the prices of iphone dropped and its reputation of being the hottest gadget of the year spread like wild-fire and the sales picked up. Apple people knew it very well that had the prices been reasonable, many more people would have wanted to buy their dream gadget, which they didn't because of the high price.

With the launch of the 3G iphone and dramatic drop in the price, there is bound to be huge rush for iphone lovers all around to have their gadget. The new 3G 8GB iphone will sell for just $199, (4GB iPhone sold for $600 at the time of launch in 2008) while the 16GB 3G iphone model will sell for $299. With this kind of pricing, Apple is sure to achieve its target of selling 10 million iphones much before the deadline and the biggest plus point in the whole story is that India is going to have the iphone in July.

Steve Jobbs, the Apple CEO, gave a big surprise on Monday (June 9, 2008) unveiling the 3G iphone for just $199 (8GB). He further revealed that Apple is planning to launch the new 3G iphone in 70 countries in the next few years. July 11 will see the launch of new 3G iphone in 22 countries including India. The new 3G iphone comes with a number of added new features which were not there in the earlier version of the Apple iphone.
